The Lions survived an almighty scare to secure a hard-fought 40-38 victory over the Sunwolves in Super Rugby at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Murphy Taramai went over after the final hooter to give the Blues a shock 38-35 win over the Lions in a 10-try thriller at Ellis Park on Saturday.

SANZAAR has announced the referee appointments for Week 2 of the 2018 Super Rugby season.

Super Rugby and The Rugby Championship will this season adopt the Law Amendments that were announced by World Rugby in July 2017 prior to the start of the 2017/2018 northern hemisphere season. The amendments relate to the scrum (Law 20), tackle (Law 15) and ruck (Law 16).

SANZAAR has announced the referee team that will officiate the 2018 Super Rugby season. With the Super Rugby tournament format reducing to 120 regular season matches this season the referee team has been reduced from 19 to 17 referees. 

The 2018 15-team Super Rugby tournament kicks-off in four weeks time on Saturday 17 February in South Africa when the Stormers host the Jaguares in Cape Town. 

 

SANZAAR has announced the match schedule for the restructured  2018 Super Rugby tournament that comprises a 15-team three-conference format.

The Crusaders claimed their eighth Super Rugby title and first since 2008 with a 25-17 victory over 14-man Lions at Ellis Park on Saturday.

The Semi-final Super Rugby team of the week includes seven players, four Lions and three Crusaders, who will feature in the Final. Player of the Week is once again Chiefs fullback Damian McKenzie who beat more players than any other player in the semi-finals, ran for over 100 metres and was 100 percent in his goal-kicking. 

Elton Jantjies has enjoyed perhaps one of his best ever Super Rugby seasons, buoyant on the highs he enjoyed in a breakout Lions’ season last campaign. He’ll face off against a markedly less experienced opponent this week, though the Crusaders’ Richie Mo’unga will be just a threatening as the Lions stalwart.

The Lions and Crusaders might be heading into the 2017 Super Rugby Final as two of the most prolific attacking teams in the competition, but the history of the fixture suggests that may count for little as the two teams prepare for one of the biggest games of their careers.

The Lions recovered from being 3-22 down to beat the Hurricanes 44-29 and secure a home Super Rugby final against the Crusaders next week.

The Quarter-final Super Rugby team of the week is very strong on paper and contains players hitting peak form at the right end of the season. Player of the Week is Lions backrow forward Jaco Kriel who scored a try, carried 11 times, beat 8 defenders and made 13 tackles.
