New Zealand Under 20s Head Coach Kane Jury has named his team to play Scotland in the second round of the 2026 Under 20 Junior World Championship in Georgia has been announced.
There are three changes to the side that started the opening Pool B match with a 38-21 win over Japan in a match that was cut short due to the threat of lightening around AIA Arena in Kutaisi.
In the forwards, Hurricanes and Hawke’s Bay loose forward Patrick Mauga comes into the squad at No.8 after missing the first match due to injury, while Ethan Webber and Cohen Norrie move into the starting XV at tighthead prop and fullback respectively.
Webber and Norrie swap roles with Dane Johnston and Logan Williams respectively who will provide impact off a bench that features a six forward, two back split.
New Zealand has a short turnaround for its second match which kicks-off at 2.00am NZT on Friday 3 July and will be available to watch live and exclusive on Sky.
Jury said the changes to the squad reflected the expectations of a fast and physical Scotland side that scored six tries in a 38-32 win over Italy in their opening match.
“We’ve gone with an extra loose forward on our bench because we expect a tough battle around the field from a very good Scotland team that showed against Italy they have threats across the park.
“The first up match against Japan was valuable to get into the tournament against a competitive opponent and in difficult conditions. It was a great reminder that you can’t take anything for granted in this tournament and we’ll need to be disciplined and clinical against Scotland.”

Meanwhile, Junior Springbok head coach Kevin Foote has made sweeping rotational changes to his side for Thursday’s second-round Junior World Championship clash against hosts Georgia in Tbilisi.
The Pool A encounter kicks off at 18h30 (SA time) and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
Foote has retained only four players from the starting team that opened the tournament with a convincing victory over Uruguay last Saturday, two of whom shifts positions for the clash against the hosts.
Lock JD Hattingh is the only forward to earn a second consecutive start, while three backs – Hendré Schoeman, Luan Giliomee and Markus Muller – retain their places in the run-on side.
Giliomee, who started at fullback against Uruguay, moves to flyhalf for Thursday’s encounter, and Muller will start at inside centre.
Regular captain Siphosethu Mnebelele returns to the starting front row at hooker and will pack down between propr Oliver Reid and Danie Kruger, with Hattingh and Heinrich Theron named at lock.
The three loose forwards are flankers Wasi Vyambwera and Luke Cannon, with Kebotile Maake at No 8.
In the backline, Jack Benade starts on the left wing, with Samuel Badenhorst and Muller forming the midfield combination. Cheswill Jooste is selected on the right wing, while Akahluwa Boqwana takes over at fullback.
The replacements bench features Liam van Wyk (hooker), Rambo Kubheka and Luan van der Berg (props), Jaythen Orange (lock), Risima Khosa (loose forward), Jayden Brits (scrumhalf), Jordan Steenkamp (wing) and Alzeadon Felix (utility back).
Foote said they always intended to rotate the squad, particularly given the demanding turnaround between pool matches: “We are fortunate to have a quality squad that has played together several times already this year. Player load management is one of the key aspects of a tournament of this nature, and squad rotation plays a very important role in that regard.”
While pleased with the performance against Uruguay, Foote added that the SA U20s’ review identified several areas where improvement is required.
“We were very happy with Saturday’s win, but after a thorough review of our performance against Uruguay, there are a few areas we are targeting to improve,” he said.
“Georgia are a very strong set-piece side and a physical opponent. Having played them a couple of times already this year, we know exactly what they are capable of.”
Georgia suffered a one-point defeat to Wales in their opening pool fixture, and Foote expects an inspired performance from the hosts on Thursday: “They are a proud and passionate rugby nation and will be disappointed after that narrow loss to Wales, so we will need to be ready mentally and physically for the challenge they will bring.
“They will also have a passionate home crowd behind them, which will make it a very tough contest.”
Ethan Adams (centre) and Khuthadzo Rasivhaga (wing) were not considered because of niggles.
